While there is no doubt that the speech of the 44th President Elect, Barack Obama, will go down in history as one of the greatest ever delivered, and though I make no secret of my elation over last night's win for the American people, I wanted to take a moment to give kudos to Senator John McCain for his gracious concession speech. Not only did he waste no time in taking the stage after the major networks called the election, the sincerity, honesty and humility in his words, not to mention his genuine admiration and support for Obama, has set a tone of unity that this country sorely needs right now. On a personal level, it quelled my urge to call the few republicans I know and give them a big ole "HA! In your face!" which would be in such poor taste. It also seemed, from my unscientific observation in the very recent aftermath, to help his republican supporters lick their wounds and then pick themselves up with dignity and put their minds on the future.
Clearly LupRocks.com is not a political site, and I'm sure some of our members and readers of this blog wished the election had turned out another way, but I think we can all learn a very valuable lesson from McCain's graciousness. When you don't get that account that you really really wanted to get, it does no good to curse out the retailer (even behind his back) and disparage the designers that he does carry. If you don't make the cut on an editorial shoot, it does absolutely no good to email the editor when the issue comes out and tell her how much better YOUR designs would have been in the layout than the ones she erroneously chose. In fact, this type of reaction is exactly what you should do if you want to leave a bad taste in the mouths of everyone you encounter, because nobody likes a sore loser. But if you can be pleasant, even in the face of disappointment, you leave people liking you and wanting to help you; you will be the first person the editor calls when you're relevant for the next shoot. There is always another opportunity; every experience is an opportunity to learn something and grow. And besides, aren't we all in this business of beautifying our world together?
